課程概述

This course explores the history of European music’s presence in East Asia, examining both the musical practices, styles, and institutions and the cultural ideologies associated with this “great encounter.” It will focus in particular on religious and political missions from Europe between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, among which that of the Jesuits counts as especially significant.

課程目標
A major goal will be to develop useful conceptual frameworks for explicating the complexities of the meeting of highly disparate cultures, going beyond platitudes such as “mixture” and “fusion” to examine detailed theories of hybridity, assimilation, exoticism, and ambivalence (among others), drawn from writings in the fields of cultural studies and postcolonial studies.
課程要求
Class meetings will focus on discussions of assigned readings. These readings will be drawn from the bibliography listed below, and posted on CEIBA course website.
In addition, there will be a semester project, on a related topic of your choice, which will culminate in a final presentation and paper.
